Achievements since obtaining Bronze Award.

Since achieving Bronze Award, the Eco Group have been working on the following:

*Developing and maintaining an Eco School Notice Board.

*Creating an anti-litter policy for the school.

*Trying to have a litter free playground with litter monitors working daily.

*Anti-Litter Poster Competition – whole school. Winning posters displayed around the school.

*New Compost Bins have been introduced within the school and the Eco Group have gone round each class to ensure all the users know what is to be put in the bins. The nurseries and the school kitchen have these as well.

*An additional large compost bin was donated to the school by Highland Council Waste Management. This is in place along side the full one.

*Healthy snacks were promoted by an Active Health Group which met weekly and the issues worked on were reported back to classes by the members. Competitions were held involving the whole school. This year the health group will be setting up a healthy tuck shop and selling smoothies, fruit and heathly snack once a week.

*The Eco group have created a wild flower garden and have planted trees at the front of the school. Hedges were pruned and planters were created from tyres found buried under the hedges. A herb area is being developed and the parsley has already taken off.

*The Eco group met regularly at least 3 times a month and had two gardening afternoons with parent/community helpers.

*The Eco group qualified for a £50 Action Earth Day grant which was used to buy compost and seeds.

*The Local Country Ranger helped to get some native trees for planting in the garden area.

*Mr Scott Bellwood (Waste Management H.C.) talked to the Eco Group about Waste and re-cycling etc. Following this talk, the Eco group did a presentation of this information to the school as part of an assembly.

*An Eco Code was made up by the Eco group and discussed with the classes. This code was accepted.

*An Eco group logo competition was held within the eco group with the children voting for their favourite. This logo will be used in Eco group letters etc.

*The whole school was involved in putting forward ideas for school playground improvements and these ideas were used to put forward a bid for a RBS Super grounds Award. This bid was successful so the Eco group will be very much involved in this during the next year.

During the summer holidays, the Highland Council built a retaining wall and improved drainage in part of the school grounds. This has now created a very good planting area. The Eco Group will be very much involved with this.

Light Monitors were established last year to ensure that lights were switched off during breaks and lunch times and all classes were dedicated to switching lights off when leaving their classroom.

Recycling Monitors were established to lift waste paper baskets every week and to empty into the recycling bins.

Plans to spend the £250 grant

As you will note from the above information, there are many ongoing projects and the grant of £250 would be used to buy compost and plants for the tyre planters. There are plans to create a colourful display of spring bulbs in the newly created walled area, as well as some shrubs which would flower during different seasons. A wheel barrow is top of our list, as during our gardening activities so far, we have wished so often that we’d had one to remove roots and tree cuttings to the compost bin. As we as totally committed now to our Supergrounds improvement plan, we would use some of our grant towards this. The Superground plans aims to create a safer and more child friendly play area within the school grounds with a view to using natural material wherever possible.
